not for people who wants to relax
Honest review — not for relaxing stays
I was honestly surprised by the good reviews because my experience was very different. The location is perfect, no complaints there. But if you’re looking to relax, this place is definitely not for you. It’s more suited for backpackers or young travellers, not for couples or families.
The hostel is very loud. If your room is near the hallway door, expect noise from early morning until late at night. We kept hearing drunk people talking outside, doors banging, and constant footsteps on the stairs. Even the pipes were noisy — when the room next door used their sink, it echoed through ours.
The shared fridge was filthy, and the shared bathroom wasn’t clean either since it’s only cleaned once a day.
We booked for 3 nights, but we ended up leaving at 12:30 AM because we simply couldn’t sleep. We expected some noise — it’s a hostel — but not this level of noise. We honestly regretted trying YMCA for the first time.
If you’re on a budget, there are better places to stay in Bath.

School tour
Spent 3 nights at Bath YMCA on a school trip. Accommodation was ideal for us, and staff were friendly throughout. Location is ideal, though parking in Bath can be limited. Had no issues while we were there (and never had any on our previous visits), but definitely can be noisy at times.

Comfortable, but too simple
A hostel in strategic location, very positive. As for the hostel, the staff is very welcoming, but the quality of the breakfast is very poor. If you arrive half an hour later you run the risk of not having a boiled egg.

Currently great value for money...not next year!
This year, we stayed again at the YMCA Bath for the Christmas market. At £58.17 in the centre of Bath - it is fantastic value for money with a good sized room, city views and great facilities for all to use. However, the mattresses are exceptionally thin and without a protector on and it's a huge shame that there isn't a lift whatsoever. The room is a good size with a sink, set of drawers and somewhere to hang a coat. I also appreciate the full length mirror but the lamp was badly stained/damaged and the blinds had fallen off the runners on the right side so I decided to fix it to enable us to sleep with the blind and curtain down. We couldn't control the radiator and the metal windows were very wet on the inside.
Early morning drinkers also using drugs were sat at the front of the YMCA playing loud music and dropping their litter on the ground. Litter is scattered all around the ground and plant areas at the front entrance to YMCA which staff should be clearing up in my opinion.
There's a TV, sofas, chairs, boardgames and some friendly staff to help you plan your day. The kitchen area is well equipped with microwaves, a fridge and freezer, an air fryer and two kettles. However, cutlery is exceptionally limited and just like at University - not everyone washes and dries what they use.
Next year, the price jumps dramatically up to £88 on Booking.com with a Genius discount from £104 which is an enormous 52% increase from this year. I understand they are having to have a new roof and because they are a Not-For-Profit organisation - they're having to take a loan out but more than 50% increase in 1 year is outrageous. Very quickly, the YMCA is losing its core values and purpose in the city and I think that they'll need to tread carefully. £88 in the centre of Bath is still obviously very good value but it's a room without an ensuite, staying amongst a wide variety of people and demographics which isn't for everyone.
