I miss the old Toad Hall...
I used to stay here back when it was Toad Hall, prior to the covid lockdowns shutting down many NZ backpackers - including this one.
I'm pleased to see this fine old building re-opened in Napier as a hostel once again, but sad to see it loosing some of its character. There was probably only one 'Toad Hall Backpackers' in the world, but I can guarantee that there are myriad 'Crash Palaces...'.
The place has been renovated, poorly. A really shabby paint job (nice colours but without any effort to do a tidy job), poor workmanship all over the place for the recent additions (not in line with what must have originally been such a wonderful building), bright hallway lights bleeding through into the dormitory room I stayed in a couple of weeks ago (May 2026) and a great downstairs common area that will be wonderful to hang out in one day...once the stinky new paint has finished off-gassing (not ideal in winter when everything is closed up).
I enjoyed the rooftop, the warm white lighting which featured throughout most of the premises (it should feature everywhere as it costs no more to buy warm white bulbs and makes the lit night environment much more pleasant); the staff member I dealt with that day was friendly too.
Long live the Toad Hall, lest all the physical relics of my good memories fade and disappear. Not to say that it wasn't a little tired by the time it closed, but, the original idea was better and more nicely executed I feel than this new incarnation.
