Splendid experience.
I stayed for 2 weeks at the Hotel Ukraine. The room assigned to me had a problem with the shower; I pointed this out in a polite but firm manner to the reception (where all the staff speak fluent English) and they showed total understanding and willingness, immediately offering me a room change, which I naturally accepted after viewing the new one, and here, to my great surprise, I noticed that I was given an unrequested upgrade, providing me with a new, splendid room! The hotel's location is unique for Kyiv: view of Maidan, from my twelfth floor a breathtaking panorama of the city from which I admired unforgettable sunsets. Beautiful room, equipped with all comforts, excellent cleanliness. Safety: the hotel puts this aspect first, being equipped with a shelter with many comfortable seats (small armchairs and soft cushions) as well as a voice alarm inside the room. Abundant and quality breakfast, internal bar with very reasonable prices, kindness, helpfulness, and professionalism of the staff. In short, a highly satisfactory experience that will make me return soon and that leads me to recommend the hotel to other visitors. Compliments!

Nothing special
I last came here 30 years ago and it really has not changed very much despite obviously having a lot of investment.
Good things :
Great location for city I walked to most of my meetings
Nice views from 12 floor bedroom
Clean
Spacious rooms
Good WiFi free of charge
Room for improvement:
Bathroom out dated with poorly fitting bath plug and no fitted shower
Only tepid water available making washing an urgent activity.
Elevators a long wait in the mornings
Check in staff made me feel that everything was too much effort
A taxi that I arranged through the concierge charged me double the agreed price to drop off wait and return to hotel. Payment was up front and they never came back to pick me up! €20 for a 2km ride!
Restaurant was poor with cold, tasteless food
Breakfast had no seating and staff would not clear a table for me saying that they were too busy so I had to share with some poor other guest that clearly did not want me eating at their table.
At 11:00 pm the prostitutes came out and sat strategically around the bar and foyer which I don’t mind as everybody needs to earn a living but this was obviously being controlled by the hotel security guard located at the elevator entrance. It creates a bad atmosphere when you feel that you are being continuously watched and managed by a pimp. Just let the girls do their thing without this mafia style control or stop it all together.
I will not come back.

Very central, comfortable, and safe. Staff is unforgettable. I’ll be back.
I stayed here a few days in early May and loved it. Nothing fancy because there is a war on, but the staff was great and you can tell they appreciate our support. I thought the breakfast was good. Again, nothing fancy, but it was healthy, there was plenty, and the little croissants were really, really good. Loved the coffee, too. There is a nice view from the restaurant.
The attractive, young lady that checked me in let me get in the room early which was a godsend if you take the night train into Kyiv. The sweetheart working the cloak room watched my bag for me after check out and reminded me of the good spirit that persists in Ukraine despite the daily hardships of war. This too, is a godsend, if you are taking the night train back to Warsaw.
The hotel is very central, and the view from my balcony was amazing, both day and night. Currently there is a memorial for fallen troops left front of hotel. You can buy a little Ukrainian flag from an old couple that are there almost every day, and place the flag next to the numerous photos of lives cut short. There is an underground mall directly in front of the hotel, and under street cross walks that make walking very easy. There are a plethora of restaurants, pubs, and souvenir shops in a half mile radius. A super nice post office is right across the street. The national bank and art museum are up the hill and behind the hotel and this street is blocked, but there is also extra security in this area. Witnessing the pattern of tracers and search lights, it was my opinion that this hotel is in a very safe location. My room had a refrigerator for beverages and a chair that fit on the balcony for enjoying the evening festivities. Sleeping in was easy and comfortable…but, try not to miss breakfast.
The hotel is big and open, with four elevators and a marble staircase to the restaurant, the echoes of restrained grandeur are prevalent. It has a cool vibe of Soviet secrets shrouded in dim corners. I’m betting the guest list would raise eyebrows in my university political science department.
The lobby bartender in the afternoon each day reminded me of the stalwart pier piling that had weathered storm after storm and still stands strong. The lines in his face and sparkle in his eyes translated more with less. I enjoyed my Jack and Coke Zero each day upon return and considered myself fortunate to have crossed his path. I very much enjoyed my stay at this hotel, and certainly will never forget my temporary camaraderie with the friendly, helpful, and tough Ukrainians making my stay an oasis in a beautiful, bustling, but beleaguered city. I will stay here next time, too.

Delightful stay, lovely staff, warm welcome, will book again
Lovely room on 7th floor overlooking Maidan, staff were amazing! Huge bed with a delightful sitting room, fridge, bathroom was large with a deep bath. Absolutely spotless. Staff were delightful and reception spoke English very well. I did have to go to the onsite bomb shelter, which was surprisingly comfortable with chairs to sit in, or like me, found a place to lie down.

A wonderful and iconic base for exploring the delights of Kyiv.
If it's your first time to Kyiv, I highly recommend the Hotel Ukraine. It's an iconic, Soviet-era hotel with an outstanding view of the Independence Monument and Maidan Square - the heart of Kyiv. It's even better at night. I stayed for 5 nights and had a very comfortable, single room on the eight floor. The style may seem dated but that's part of its charm - all was in fine shape, well maintained and very functional. The staff seemed a little stiff at first but were actually very considerate and helpful. The restaurant served a very good dinner and breakfast, but the hotel is very close to many fine restaurants, cafes and even brewpubs. The room had most everything but no tea kettle. But the bar in the lobby is happy to make you tea or coffee. There are few things more elegant than drinking fine tea from your lobby table while appreciating the terrific view. Despite the near-nightly air raids, i felt very safe here. Finally, the hotel is quite affordable.
