Great stay!
This hostel is centrally located and very easy to find. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and comfortable. This is located in a safe area as well and only a 3 minute walk to Gran Via train station. We would definitely stay here again.

Short and Sweet
We stayed here for 4 nights after stopping by in Barcelona...It was a big complicated to find even the taxi driver was not sure where to go or how to get there! We also spent time trying to get there by Metro prior as per the instructions we were given even though it turned out to be wrong! Eventually we found the reception area after 2hours near main madrid city centre high street within a building where we had to go to check in before going to our room!We then got checked in and walked 10mins to the building where our room was located. We was given a front door key and room key which gave us easy access during all hours. The room was small and compact and we only has one small wardrobe very tighly spaced for 2 people. We ended up leaving our things in our cases. The bathroom was also very tight but we had some soap, gel provided if we needed it. Our balncony was nice just such a shame there was a massive air con unit in it which prevented us from standing there to get fresh air. I have to admit the street we were on was a nosey busy one and there were times I could not sleep from rubbish vans/shouting and drunkness! But overall it was another nice short trip...One of the colleagues in our building reception area gave us a bottle of champagne as he liked us and wanted to add a touch.It was a trip we would never forget We was close to few metro stations and town centre and food places Location wise was suitable and easy to get to places.

Clean, but too expensive for what it is
Localisation and cleanliness, those are the two positives.
Rest is not so good.
Conditions are beyond basic, it's not a problem, but the price is way too much for it.
None speaks any English, basics would be enough.
Even though I notified the hotel of my flight delay there was no one at reception, barely got someone to come over to let me in.
While I was here, there was one quick power outage, on another occasion the wifi was down and one night there was no hot water.
Rest is not so good.

Great Location, Clean, Quiet and AC!
This hostal was located on the second or third floor of a somewhat nondescript building in Madrid. The neighborhood, over the weekend was slightly raucous, but the location was great. We were close by the metro and several of the main central squares. The hostal itself was fairly bare bones and it was on the third floor of the building, which had a really cool winding staircase. It was obviously an old building which gave the hostal a bit of character. The first floor was taken up by stores and I think apartments were on the other floors. The first time we arrived at the hostal we had to be buzzed into the building, but after that we were given a key to the main building, to the hostal floor and then to our room. While not ‘high tech’ the number of locks gave the hostal a sense of security. There was a small entrance area, and then the rooms were all down a long hallway. We had our own bathroom so we didn’t check out the communal bathroom, but the other spaces were clean and neat (if not overly fancy). The staff were friendly and accommodating (especially when we wanted to get into our room a little early and store luggage). However, they seemed to exclusively speak italian and spanish, which proved mildly challenging when our non-spanish speaker arrived to check in first. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t fault someone for not knowing a language that isn’t spoken in their country. Our room was clean and plain, with two double beds and a window that overlooked a courtyard. The decor was sparse, but again, the room was clean and tidy. There IS airconditioning, and our room had a room unit that was controlled by a remote. The unit worked quite well to cool the room, even in the middle of the Madrid summer. There was wifi, of good quality. In the end, this is exactly what we were looking for in Madrid- clean, safe, good location. The rooms were simple and plain and there wasn’t much in the way of ‘ambience’ but it was still a very good place to stay in Madrid.

Well Located; Sufficient Accommodations
Hostal Alistana has a prime location, situated on the lower part of Calle de Hortaleza just minutes by foot from both the Tribunal and Gran Via metro stops. For tourists who like walking a city, the main palace in Madrid, the Prado, the central market, and the Park del Retiro are all easily accessible. Further bolstering Hostal Alistana’s location is the busyness of the street, permitting one to return late in the evening/early in the morning from tapas tasting, without any safety concerns. Finally, there is a small grocery store directly across the street from the Hostal.
As for the accommodations, sufficient sums it up best. They have a mix of shared bath rooms and private baths rooms. The rooms are air conditioned and fairly spacious for a European hostal. The rooms are scattered around a pentagon shaped floor plan with the interior rooms still receiving sufficient exterior light.
There are a few drawbacks. First, the building does not have an elevator so if carrying luggage up several flights of old and uneven stairs is not for you, this might not be the right place. Second, while I found the bedding generally comfortable, the queen beds are really two twin beds pushed together, so there is a crack down the middle of the bed that tends to widen when one rolls over. Third, the WIFI and tv signals were not the most reliable. Finally, the hostal owner speaks Spanish and Italian but not much English, so be prepared for a language barrier.
Overall, I was pleased with my stay, especially given the reasonable rates. This hotel is perfect for the tourist more interested in experiencing the city than staying in luxury or the student touring through Europe.
