Great place to stay

The family room was lovely clean and fresh nice decorated and very spacious the beds are very comfortable lots of pillows, the heating was on very warm felt like home, the food is good would definitely recommend a stay here local to the university if visiting your child the price was excellent value for more an more all staff are very friendly an helpful the owner make you feel at home will be staying here again

Avoid- awful service, awful accommodation

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon having booked two months in advance and having prepaid. We tried to check in with the man at the bar only to be told so nonchalantly ‘sorry girls we haven’t got any rooms left’. We were in disbelief and waited at the bar like we were asked to. After some swearing down the phone from him to his manager they miraculously found a room for us. However, we booked a family room and they were only able to give us a double room. The room was dirty and the paint was peeling off the walls. We complained about this and were offered lunch on the house. We requested this for the day after as it was already nearly 5pm. On Friday we awoke to be told that the kitchen was closed all day and so we wouldn’t be having our free lunch. We were moved to a family room which we were happy with. This was until we arrived back at the hotel at 9.30pm ready to settle down for sleep. The pub directly below the rooms was hosting a 65th birthday party which hotel guests had had no prior warning of. The floor of the hotel rooms was vibrating and shaking and the music was so loud that we couldn’t even hear the TV in front of us. People were shouting and singing and music was blaring. We knew that booking a pub hotel would mean people would be drinking and eating possibly later into the night, but we did not expect a place which labels itself as ‘Bertie’s accommodation’ plastered all over the outdoor signage to then be hosting a party with more than 100 people. I went to enquire when the music would be stopping and I was told midnight. I expressed my disappointment that we couldn’t even hear ourselves think in the room and I was told ‘sorry, it’s a pub’. The pub very clearly advertises itself as accommodation, but management clearly don’t care about this aspect of the business. We had an early start and had no choice but to book a different hotel at this point. There was no way we could sleep through a blaring speaker and drunken karaoke. We were certain it wouldn’t be ending at midnight either.
I have stayed at plenty of pubs that offer accommodation and whilst there is always some noise from punters, I have never had the experience of the pub hosting a huge party directly below the accommodation.
Management were rude and didn’t care at all about their guests. They dismissed all of our concerns. We ended up booking a room in a different hotel chain. We expected much better from a hotel under the Marstons PLC group name.

Avoid like the plague

Do not stay here. Music blaring until after 3am. Didn't get any sleep. Not acceptable, will be complaining to council

Poor accommodation with no service

The room is large with an odd assortment of furniture. No bathroom shelving for toiletries. We had 1 bath towel and hand towel for 2 people. The TV was small, near the ceiling and didn't work! The room was never serviced so 2nd day we emptied our own bin. No tea, coffee and milk replacement. There was never staff around am to raise problems. pm only bar staff who denied responsibility for lack of service.
The paperwork said daily room service
Also the room was very noisy from the street traffic and the bar entertainment

Room Adequate, Noise Unacceptable

The room was a little tired looking but adequate with TV, tea and coffee making facilities. The bed's were comfy and clean. The bathroom had a funny smell but the shower was good. Unfortunately the overnight stay was ruined by the noise.
Arrived on a Friday night after travelling for 3 hours, to be met by a very loud karaoke singer in the bar. Whilst, I accept it was a Friday night the noise was quite deafening to the point that I struggled to hear the staff when I was booking in and the floor in our room was vibrating. The singer did stop at 11pm but the juke box continued until well past midnight with raised voices downstairs (possibly outside) until 3am. Managed to catch a couple of hours sleep before the sound of people talking and moving up and down the corridor outside our door woke me up at 5/6am.
I appreciate it was a room above a pub but the level of noise after closing time was unacceptable which is a shame as I wanted to use a local business rather than a faceless Travelodge-style hotel.
