The thistle was a very good choice for our stay it's close to all the places for a meal and if you want a little drink then the pub is a good place for you and your family, good food and family friendly 💘

Cold, and you saw no one

Stayed here for one night, and im glad it was only 1 night, i contacted the owner as we werent sure how to book in etc, politely told the door is open, the key is on the windowsill, when we did get there, on opening the door finding the key , there was an odd smell, very basic, it was cold, and remained cold even though the radiator was on wasnt bursting out with heat, there was no spare blankets either so i was cold most of the night, on the wednesday morning i was tired, cold glad to get back in the car, still no sight of anyone, i was a nurse ( rehab, id find patients a bed for the night when on community) for 44yrs and this reminded me of taking patients to homeless pods, but they were heated, so i very much doubt theyed stay there either, yes it was cheap but definately not cheerful, i certainly would not be staying again, id pay the extra and stay in a hotel with heating and comfort, as this was not comfortable at all, never again

We’re a family of three (13 year old child) and I’m also pregnant. We were expecting the stay to be basic due to the price, but the reviews looked ok and it seemed ok based on our purposes of staying to visit a relative in hospital for a couple of nights. We arrived at the hotel to find a dilapidated, boarded up old pub of the same name at the front. We arrived just before 6pm and the door had been left unlocked with the keys on the windowsill. The step and flower beds outside the room were covered in cigarette butts, the room smelled of smoke and damp and was generally run down. There were white stains on the curtains on the bathroom toilet mat, out of date buscuits with the complimentary teas and coffees, the walls were that thin we could hear the ‘neighbours’ argument very clearly at 2am in the morning on both nights (although there were ear plugs provided in the room which was helpful). We only had 2 towels despite there being 3 of us and despite requesting a third, we never received this. The bed was comfy enough and the shower worked although the bathroom was quite compact. The TV didn’t work and we just received pixelated images.

Did the job

Stayed here a few nights whilst visiting a relative who was in hospital down the road. I booked through their own website, was easy to do. Greeted by Sandy on arrival, who gave me the key and couldn't have been more welcoming. Parking was right outside of the room in the secluded car park. The room was clean and was all I needed to get my head down for the night. Shower was not very powerful but enough to get washed. I wasn't expecting luxury, I just wanted a room for the night and this is what I got, basic and worth the price. Close enough to walk to town for meals and drinks. As a solo female traveller I felt safe enough there and it did the job.

Very compact, but clean and cosy. A more budget option for ferry catchers.
