Wonderful, peaceful holiday.
The staff were lovely, and our room, which was upgraded for an extra £20 per night. The room was a nice size and temperature and had a lovely balcony with a gorgeous view. The food was delicious and the menu changed often enough that it never got repetitive.
Yes, it is a little dilapidated in places, but honestly, that just added to the charm. The only thing I would say needs updating ASAP are the steps leading down towards the lake. I nearly went flying on the first day!
However, I'm still awarding five stars for an extremely peaceful break away, plus bonus points for Fluffy the cat! We will definitely be back for a longer stay next year.

Fabulous experience
The hotel is located with stunning views of Ullswater and ideally situated to visit lots of local towns and places of interest.
The hotel itself is beautifully appointed and our room was larger than usual with views down to the lake. The large bed was very comfortable and we were lucky enough to have balcony.
What sets the hotel apart is wonderful team who worked so hard to make sure we enjoyed our stay. From the warm and friendly greeting on arrival from Basil on reception to the excellent day to day service we received from Magic, in the bar and restaurant. Also, another team member, a receptionist, who shared the fascinating history of the hotel
We enjoyed our stay so much we extended our stay thanks to Basil assisting us to get a great deal.
We will definitely be returning, thanks to the great service and convenient location

Relaxing for us humans and oor dugs!
1st room was located on the ground floor which overlooked the side garden. Big room with twin balconies. Found a problem with the toilet flush and quickly moved to another room.
2nd room was on the "lower ground floor" which is actually has direct access to the garden.
Bedroom;
the room was dark as the only light comes in thru the doors and the room was long. There were sufficient lamps etc. We were given an additional fan to help with "aircon" but it was still too warm but we spent most of the time sitting out on the wee patio.
the bed was big and comfortable, couldn't comment on the duvet as we slept on top of the bed due to the heat.
2 comfortable armchairs but the pleather was peeling.
Room big enough to accommodate 2 spaniels, 2 humans and all their stuff with getting on the way!
Bathroom;
Shower over bath but the screen doesn't hold the water so the floor was a wee bit flooded. The bath is very narrow so you need to watch where your feet go. Shower temperature control very easy to use and decent water pressure. One pet peeve of mine is that there are handtowels and bathtowels but no in-between ones. I need one this size for my hair!
Complimentary toiletries was "Scottish Fine Soaps" which I actually use at home!
Outside space;

Dog friendly dining room available which wasn't busy but we met a few other four legged guests.
We ate twice for evening meals which were very tasty. The chef changed one of their dishes to suit my taste. Perfect crispy chunky chips, we would have been happy with just the chips! My steak was cooked to my liking, well done but still succulent. Massive cheese board that the hubby couldn't finish it.
Breakfast was enough to set you up for the day for both continental and cooked.
Grounds;
22 acres with direct access to the Lake. Sun terrace facing the lake, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view. Plenty of easy walking routes around the garden but watch out for the bunnies! Our spaniels had never seen one before so they were very excited.
In general, the hotel needs a lot of TLC in a few areas. It is an old hotel but these could be classed as part of the charm. The staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble for them even coping with a "stray" dog from one of the other rooms at 2 in the morning!
We would go back as our stay was enjoyable and the food was excellent.
