Cheap and cheerful

The family at Pearl's Rest couldn't have been more welcoming. A cold drink on arrival and made me feel very welcome. They even worried when I arrived back after 10pm on the late bus from Talaimannar and tried to call me to check I was ok. I had a room on the first floor overlooking the pond. The room has mosquito nets, a sheet and a towel provided. The ved was not the most comfortable but it was ok for a night. The location is correct on booking.com and on Google you just have to be look at your map to take the right road but it was exactly where it should have been with light blue gates and a small Pearl's Rest sign. In the evening I spoke to the mum and daughter, the daughters English is great and she will translate all of Mum's many questions. I was catching the early train and her husband gave me a free ride on his motorbike, he provided a helmet too, to get there for 8am, it was a few kilometres as well. For £8 a night it is a cheap and cheerful option for spending the night in Mannar. There isn't too much to do here, more of a gateway to Talaimannar for a trip to see the sunset.

Don't bother.

I don't even know where to start. We arrive and get pointed into a room downstairs. The smells hits us straight away, the walls are stained with who knows what, the whole room looks like a prison cell, the windows are blocked with wooden panels and there are metal bars. Also in the room is lots of personal belongings from the family. We get sceptical and ask for another room. They are fully booked. They actually overbooked the place. The room we were meant to have was a double room with balcony but because they let people stay longer than they booked, they gave us their room. When we ask for a price reduction they refuse and say on booking it states the price. Yeah but on booking it also says we have a double room with a balcony. There was no point of wasting any more time. We got out and found another place to stay. Smiles can't always solve the problem.

Below any standard of hygiene

Good location, close to city center and in a quiet area. The family is nice and helpful and especially the daughter speaks good english and is very nice.
The rooms in general are simple but good and there is a common area to sit.Our room with two single beds had only one mosquito net, though.
What I have to criticize highly is the cleanliness. The shared bathroom was not cleaned at all while I was there, even though the place was fully booked. Some people mentioned in their review the good food but when I saw the kitchen, it was totally unappetizing. Please have a look before you order food! I've travelled longtime in India, I've seen many things, I am not fussy, but that was not a place to prepare food for clients. Maybe the owners are not experienced with managing a hotel yet but the standard in terms of hygiene is just too low.
At the end, when it was time to pay the mother increased the price all in a sudden and didn't "remember" the agreed prices.
I can recommend the place, as the family is nice, but don't expect too much.

Basic room

Pearls rest is very hard to find (location of trip advisor and maps.me are wrong, check Google maps).
IT is cheap, everything is basic , the room , the place and the food.
Owner is Nice, Nice balcony.

Sucio y decadente

La familia es simpática pero tienen las habitaciones sucias. El baño también está super sucio, con recuerdos olvidados de otros huéspedes que no se molestan en retirar, tales como cepillos de dientes o peines.
Hay un salón de uso común, con un par de sofás y una mesa baja. El balcón da a un lago artificial, que por supuesto también está sucio y lleno de restos de botellas y otras basuras.
El lugar tiene un gran potencial si lo mantuviesen más limpio y Le dieran un aspecto más agradable y apetecible.
