Exceptional stay. Truly paradise.
My partner and I stayed here for 2 weeks in paradise. The vibe is extremely chill and the hosts Elli and Zigor were great. The main bonus, other than the great views, is the fact that you share a kitchen with the other guests. There are fridges in which you can put your food, and everything that you need to make yourself a meal. This is a huge plus for travelling on a budget, and from what we saw around, is a unique feature for the location).The resort has its own water filtration system so you can drink the water right from the tap with zero issues (as opposed to needing to buy water like the other places around). You are steps from the beach, but can also chill in the many hammocks available throughout the resort. The whole place is small, with 7 or 8 bamboo huts and cabins, so you get to know the travellers that come and go. A walk to town (Santa Catalina) will take you 20min. There are 2 small mercados there to buy essentials. There are restaurants along the way too. So no need to stray far for a meal. Try the Argentinean Restaurant called Los Pibes. On the road towards Santa Catalina on the left.
To get there from Panama City is easy, but takes almost an entire day. Take the bus from Albrook station to Sona (milk run of about 5 hrs), and then a smaller bus from Sona to Santa Catalina (local bus that takes about 1.5 -2 hrs). When you get to Santa Catalina, ask the driver to drop you off at Rancho Estero, sometimes if you're nice, they will :).
As for surfing, my partner is a beginner-intermediate surfer and had no problems there. And for me, a non surfer, the beach is simply amazing. At high season, we counted 20 people total on the beach on a week day. It's quiet and peaceful. Weekends are busy, and the locals provide ample music from their vehicles below on the beach to keep you entertained. But by 11pm, all was done.
We walked to other hostels around Playa Estero and none compare to Rancho Estero's vibe.
Oh, and another bonus, the wifi is sketchy...so leave your phone in your bag and enjoy the beach, read a book while sitting in a hammock, or spend some time chatting with the other guests...it will do you wonders.

The place to be in Sta. Catalina !
Since the very first moment of our arrival we felt at home.
Regarding the managers, both "Zigor", "Eli" and little Julen resemble the typical postcard family. Always in a good mood, smiling, helpful, polite... It is very convenient that Zigor gives surfing lessons (he told us he´s been +15 years doing so) and helped us book and arrange a trip to Coiba Natural Park.
About Rancho Stero, the place has a magical good vibe. We were lucky to met awesome people on the other rooms, ranging from all ages 20s to 60s, couples, friends, families & children. The place is seafront and has a common kitchen, comon bathrooms and a common deck where to see the beach, sunrise and the nightsky full of stars. Our cabin had three Queen size beds (matterses where brand new) and a private bathroom (I assume all cabins are the same).
The place has direct access to Estero beach, although it doesn´t work as restaurant and serve meals the neighbour is Mama Ines restaurant, where you can have generous dishes of fresh fish and chicken.
Other from this, the only bad thing about the place was having to leave :-)

My favorite place in travel history so far
Awesomely nice views over Playa Estero! 40$ for a private cabin which enabled me to do a wave-check by just looking through my window! The bed is completely surrounded by a moscito net what makes you enjoy the bungalow style without thinking about any insects. Bathroom so was shared but always clean and even with hot water. There are really good Surfboards for rental and a lot of advice in regard to surfing spots and tide as well as snorkeling trips to La Coiba. The couple who organizes everything here is awesomely nice and I couldn’t believe they are not the original owners - anyway they care as they would be! There is a kitchen for cooking and Restaurant Mama Ines which is serving proper breakfast, lunch and dinner is really next door. It is a 15 min walk to “town” but therefore only 20 stairs to the beach and the waves I love this place and extended my stay to 11 days after the first night!

Simply the best place to be in Santa Catalina!
I stayed in one of the small bamboo cabins and loved it. The cabins are simple, but you don't need much, if you spend most of the day outside in the hammocks or on the beach. The view is amazing. If you have the window open, you can see the ocean from the bed. I also enjoyed cooking in the outdoor-kitchen with ocean view.
The staff has been super nice and helpful. They also organized a snorkeling tour to Coiba for us and we loved it. The islands are so beautiful. If you want surflessons, Zigor (the manager) gives very good lessons. I was able to stand up on the first day and I never surfed before.
I would definitely recommend this place.

Fantastic!
Stayed here with my girlfriend and 3 French friends in a 6 person cabin. What you get for the price is totally worth it compared to other hostels/hotels directly at the beach. Super chill vibe, nice common area and the guests and hosts were amazing! Also the perfect waves for people who want to surf: beginners-experts. I would recommend this to anyone going to Santa Catalina. The owner even sent us a mail when we already left the property with her apologizes; she gave us the wrong time schedule for the bus doing the Eastern. Thanks for everything.
