Just stunning.....
This was our second stay at The Datai (our last visit was about 25 years ago). The Datai experience was everything i remembered and more. This time we stayed in a rainforest villa. The rooms are beautifully decorated with the largest her/her bathrooms, and an enormous tub for long soaks! Beautiful fruit platters in the room each day, showing the local seasonal fruit was lovely. We were visited by monkeys several times during our stay (as were our friends). What an experience.
Breakfast was exceptional. Nothing like bubbles or a Bloody Mary to start the day. I wish I knew the name of our chef, but every morning he made me the most delicious fresh roti, to be enjoyed with dahl or curry. Everything you could ever want for breakfast. My favourite food station at breakfast!
Snacks and drinks by the "adult" pool were lovely, as was the complimentary ice cream and cocktails shots!
The beach club and bar was excellent for cocktails and a more casual lunch.
We enjoyed the complimentary morning guided tour, and also the evening rainforest tour. "Ham" our guide for both, is an absolute legend and he is so passionate about the animals. We were also fortunate enough to see a cobra on our evening walk. Ham was thrilled, and was talking to the snake in the way I would talk to my dogs (what a beautiful creature you are..., you are a beautiful animal). His enthusiasm towards the animals was contagious! Thank you Ham!
We arrived the evening of "cocktails and canapes with management" and that was a really delightful experience. Lovely to meet so many of the staff that we encouraged during our stay.
The Spa, well what can I say... an absolutely sensational experience. Worth every penny. Such a beautiful indoor/outdoor villa for treatments. The monkeys were playing in the trees as we sat enjoying tea after our massage. An experience I will never forget.
We also viewed the beachfront villas before we left and they look absolutely amazing! The butler "Ben" showed us around and explained all the details. I will definitely be staying in the Beach Villas next time.
Of really special note.... on my second last day, I mentioned to the pastry chef that I loved the Parisian Tarts that were on the buffet during our first morning (that I did not see again). What an absolute treat when the next morning a plate of Parisian Tarts were delivered to our table during breakfast. It's this kind of personal touch that makes The Datai experience unforgettable.

Nice stay
We had a lovely stay at the Datai. The food was excellent and being inside of an ancient rainforest was great.
A few service glitches - we weren’t aware that we had to book onto the complimentary activities (such as the rainforest walk) before arriving at the hotel. The communication about this with the reception staff was chaotic - one member said there was some availability over the weekend but when I responded go to book a place (a few minutes later) they’d respond an hour later saying someone else got there first. All very confused.
Aside from that we had a nice stay.

20th Anniversary - Sooo Good
I had been working hard thru our actual anniversary dates so this trip was really to apologize to my wife for working and to visit The 'Datai' again, as we had celebrated an important birthday at one of the truly amazing Beach Villas in 2024.
The Datai reservations member had kindly arranged for the room to be readied with an anniversary them which was very much appreciated by my wife and I, many thanks!
We arrived around 6pm so I assume most people were having sundowners at the beach or in their rooms showering, as the atmosphere was very serene indeed and all the staff in the lobby bar were very warm and helpful. So, tapas and a double of the Datai's own branded gin (from Italy) at the lobby bar and to bed, as we had an early and quick breakfast and golf at The Els Club planned the following morning.
We were treated very well by some familiar faces at The Els Club and the caddies Irfan and Lee did a magnificent job as usual guiding us around the beautiful resort, resulting in some lovely golf from my wife who beat me very convincingly!!
After some drinks at The Datai and a very nice meal at the superb Gulai restaurant where we met and chatted with the butler from the well known BBC tv hotel show, we were tucked up in bed by 8.30pm for a solid 10 hours of wonderful sleep in one of the best beds ever, just delightful.
A two-hour majestic breakfast and then a gentle walk down to the beach for a nice walk on the sand to enjoy a coffee with champagne and a lovely chat with the wonderful 'Sitiana', who has worked at the Beach Club for some time now and has always made us feel so welcome. Thank you Sitiana.
A very sad time flying home to Malaysia's capital, twin-towered city. Two days just is not long enough at all, but entire Datai team and all at the Els Club made the trip unforgettable for us both.
See you 'next year' for at least one week. A thousand thanks.

Still very special, after all these years
The Datai continues to create a clear separation from destinations of similar standing in Southeast Asia in three distinctive ways:
(1) An extraordinary sense of place
The spectacular natural setting, exquisite design language and immense sense of place speak for themselves. I won’t comment too much on these, as they are truly things one needs to see and feel to believe.
(2) Strong philosophies, deeply embedded.
What impresses us is how deeply the property is built around its own philosophies, from the thoughtful incorporation of local elements, to its approach to ethical and sustainable hospitality, and, perhaps most tellingly, the remarkable longevity of its frontline associates. This is something that feels increasingly rare, not only in Langkawi but even by Malaysian standards.
(3) A remarkable refusal to become complacent.
This is perhaps what stands out most to us. After more than three decades at the very top of the offering, The Datai continues to evolve. New activities are introduced with thoughtful discoveries, menus are continually reinvented, and we find ourselves pleasantly surprised every time we return. The only thing that never seems to change is the warmth and that warmth is what gradually turns guests into part of the Datai family.
We also experienced a few minor hiccups early in our stay, which we shared with the management team. What impressed us was the receptiveness and, more importantly, the follow-through. Feedback was acted upon promptly, with no performative apologies and no defensiveness. No tells, all shows. The improvements were immediately felt.
In the end, we were once again reminded of what makes The Datai so special and why, after all these years, we keep coming back.

Understated luxury in the middle of the Malaysian rainforest
My wife and I recently spent 3 nights at The Datai Langkawi to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We spent 2 nights in a Canopy Suite and our last night in a Rainforest Villa to get a feel for the different experiences available at the hotel. The rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable.
When we arrived, we met the General Manager, Stephane, who welcomed us personally and took time to explain the facilities and the core 'Datai eco philosophy'. They also left us some nice touches, like some champagne in our room for the anniversary which was appreciated.
The Datai resort is located in the heart of a 10 million-year-old rainforest, and the hotel design is very much in keeping with this concept. If you think luxury is all about glass, steel, and flashy ornaments, this isn’t your kind of place. The architecture is subtle, understated, and designed for integration into the environment. It really felt like living next to nature; it was not unusual to see adventurous monkeys exploring the corridors and colorful hornbills flying overhead. The place itself is just very peaceful—there is even a roadside sign as you approach the resort which reiterates “Don’t rush – You are on island time”!
The customer service fits the environment perfectly. The well-resourced hotel staff are friendly and attentive, but not in your face or intrusive. No one seems to be in a rush, and this creates a relaxed and easygoing feel throughout the resort.
The food and drinks at the various different restaurants were excellent, with a variety of different regional and Western foods to try and the pristine white sand beach overlooking the turquoise Andaman Sea is stunning and lives up to expectations. We also treated ourselves to a relaxing couples massage at the secluded Serenity Spa which was great. We came away feeling rejuvenated and energized. Thank you, Datai team for your hospitality; we would definitely look forward to a return visit!
