Perfectly located in middle of the temple area with free parking in front. Like in a Ryokan you walk around in slippers, the spacious room consists of Tatami mats and the (rather high) price includes dinner (in room) and breakfast (you eat sitting on the floor). As this is a temple there are nice little garden places to look at and the food is vegan. We liked it, it was beautifully arranged with many small dishes, but it typically has not much taste. The futon was very comfortable, and we also visited the morning Buddhist ceremony (at 6.30 am), it was not too long and very interesting.

Second time at Jokiin

This is my second time coming to Koya-san and staying at Jokiin - this time in the winter. The coldness was rather brutal to say the least, but the company and hospitality of everyone at the temple is warm and made it bearable. Also I always look forward to the Shojin Ryori cuisine served here. It's a good change of pace to not feel bad after indulging on heavy foods.

An immersive experience

Our experience in the monastery was really enjoyable. As soon as we arrived we wore slippers to access the monastery and they accompanied us to our rooms. We wore the classic Japanese kimono and visited the entire building, including the beautiful outdoor garden. We relaxed in the onsen, very small but relaxing and perfect for an intimate warm bath. We slept in the classic futon, but the thing I particularly enjoyed was the vegan dinner and breakfast of small plates with really good dishes, and the monks’ prayer during the morning, which we witnessed before leaving the monastery. A really complete experience, in a really suggestive place like Koya-san: I recommend a ride through the streets of the village and in particular a visit to the immense cemetery surrounded by greenery.

We had a room with private bathroom but there was a japanese bath which was very nice.
Very nice place and the monks were very nice and helpful.
In the morning they had a ceremony with the guests which was also very interesting

Beautiful hotel, the monks attending are really nice, definitely go to the morning ceremony, it is worth it. This is near everything and very centric to all the landmarks nearby. The "beds" are pretty hard since its traditional, but its manageable for a night or two. Meals were really good, definitely don't skip them and take the chance to eat traditional monk meals.
