Comfortable room, excellent breakfast

This is a comfortable place to stay if you are looking for a no frills hotel. It is run by an elderly couple and his family, I think. The elderly man was very kind and accommodating. We din realize that the hotel accepts cash payment only and he allowed us to pay the next day after we managed to go to the bank.
The room was basic but comfortable. My family was the only ones staying there, and we got the exclusive use of the bath. Best of all among all things was the breakfast.
And if you decide to stay here, pls note that only cash payment is accepted.

Very basic and remote

Pension is a bit outdated. All very basic and the place is remote from anything. One restaurant is close by but that's all. There is a pick-up service from the station, so that's nice. Minimal English is spoken.
Conclusion without your own transport it's not an ideal place.

Overpriced, running down

Things are breaking down here. Onsen apparently all dried up and not available (shouldn't I be getting a refund?), TV in my room not working, internet probably turned off pass midnight, bathroom not heated and toilet seat stone cold.. Heck, even the hot water dispenser is broken when the outside temperature is minus 4c!

Need to request for meals

There was only one staff when we arrived as it seemed that we were the only guest that night. Minimal English is spoken. Earlier, we did request for meal option after our reservation but somehow, it wasn't communicated. In the end we had to drive out (not much eating places nearby and it was really dark in autumn).
Staff was kind enough to prepare breakfast singlehandedly seeing that we were pathetic that night. Just a room and bath. Also, we tried to request for the onsen but he don't seen to understand.

A charming pension with friendly innkeepers

Pension Bell Bird is a quiet and beautiful B&B in the Aso region. It's a Japanese-style 'pension' which means Western style bedrooms and breakfast (omelette with ham, salad and rolls). Breakfast is delicious.
It wasn't easy to find initially (even with GPS). But I love the onsen! Perfect after a cold day up snowy Mt Aso! And it can be reserved so no worries about showing your naked butt to strangers.
The staff are ok with a bit of English, but they're real friendly. Kudos to them for recommending the nice kaiseki restaurant just down the road. And for providing free umbrellas.
But despite the presence of a few nice places nearby, there isn't much choice for dinner around here (we were here in November). There's horse-riding just a short walk away, but we didn't get to try it.
Room was spacious and there was even a common living room next door. However, the beds were kinda soft and the in-room shower (if you're not into Japanese-style baths) was not easy to control.
