Amazing Atmosphere, but a Few Stargazer Surprises

I really loved the overall ambiance and vibe at Under Canvas. The setting is beautiful, and the view of Mount Rushmore makes the experience feel special. Sitting around the campfires at night and making complimentary s’mores was definitely one of my favorite parts of the stay.
I stayed in a Stargazer tent, which was very nice and had a surprisingly comfortable bed. It got down to about 59°F overnight, and I was still perfectly comfortable. One thing I wish I had known beforehand, though, is that the Stargazer setup doesn’t quite allow you to lie normally in bed and look straight up at the stars. The bed is only partially underneath the viewing window, so to get the full overhead view, you have to scoot yourself halfway above the top of the bed. It wasn’t quite the stargazing-from-bed experience I had pictured.
The other downside was a fire alarm going off in a nearby tent around 3 a.m. for at least 10 minutes, which woke everyone up and definitely disrupted an otherwise peaceful night.
Overall, I really enjoyed the experience, especially the atmosphere, campfires, s’mores, comfortable accommodations, and Mount Rushmore view. It is a little pricey for what you get, but it’s certainly a unique and memorable way to stay in the Black Hills.

Positives: tents were cool (weather feature great!), beds comfy, lobby very nice, food def decent, staff responsive, smores a nice amenity, location to attractions good.
Place needs a general overhaul. Road to enter is quite rough. Grounds are not well lit, paths to tents are very uneven. Wood burning stoves in tents are a great concept but are certainly not user friendly. Hard to start/maintain a fire, tent filled with smoke multiple times despite following instructions to a t and plenty of supplies offered.
Honestly a bit disappointing; expected a bit more based on website depiction and cost.

Visiting Mt. Rushmore with no prior planning was challenging. Having never glamped, staying here was a delightful western experience. The staff was very helpful, the accommodations were exactly as described, the bed very comfortable. It was an enjoyable sleep. The dining was very affordable and quite delicious. Overall it was one of the highlights of our five day trip to the Black Hills and Badlands. Without doubt, we would stay at an Under Canvas facility again.

Serious health risk: tent infested with mice, zero cleanliness and no refund

I understand and accept the spirit of a stay in a tent, but the safety and health of guests must always be guaranteed. What we experienced at this property is completely unacceptable and dangerous.
Health risk and infestation: Our tent was invaded by rodents. We had to kill 5 of them in the span of 30 minutes and the next morning the situation continued. Mice carry diseases and the tent was full of droppings, creating a visibly unhealthy and unsafe environment.
No cleaning service: We explicitly asked the staff to come and clean and sanitize the room to remove the dirt and droppings, but the request was completely ignored.
​Non-existent customer service: At check-out, we asked for a refund for the night spent in these emergency conditions. We were promised a response via email after consultation with the manager, but after more than a week we still haven't received any news.
​Staying in nature does not mean having to put your health at risk. Scandalous management on both a hygienic and human level. I strongly advise against it to anyone.

Not what we expected

Have always wanted to try "glamping" but this was incredibly expensive for what it is. Our tent was right next to the main parking lot, I'm sure it would have been much quieter and a better experience to be on a more remote lot. We were #11 and heard cars constantly coming and going and it was loud. Things to consider: no AC, only little battery powered fans so you are at the mercy of the weather and if it's hot there is no way to cool down. Battery packs for the lanterns, ours were dead and they replaced quickly but even turning on a light in your tent can turn into a hassle. And lastly we had mice in both our tent and our kids teepee. We thought it was funny since we are in nature but we didn't have any food in the tents so they must just wanted to hang out. We were only there from 5pm until 8 the next morning and that was more than long enough for us to realize this wasn't our thing. The bed was comfortable and the breakfast food was also good but $500 a night is ridiculous.
