The wonderful accommodation in Aultnagar - Kirkwall (Orkney)

The house is very comfortable and well-cared-for in every detail. Laura is very kind and attentive to every need. The breakfasts are excellent and abundant. Laura personally prepares wonderful scones and, upon request, excellent porridge topped with fresh fruit and yogurt. The stay at the B&B Aultnagar was very pleasant and we felt like family. The care and cleanliness of the house are remarkable.

Aultnagar beautifull

The house is very comfortable and cared for down to the last detail. Laura is extremely kind and attentive to every need. The breakfasts are excellent. Our stay at B&B Aultnagar was very pleasant and we felt like we were part of the family.
La casa è molto confortevole e curata in ogni particolare. Laura è gentilissima, attenta ad ogni necessità. Le colazioni sono ottime. Il soggiorno al B&B Aultnagar è stato molto piacevole e ci siamo sentiti in famiglia.

Quiet, but...

Aultnagar appears to be keeping its options open on location, describing itself as both “close to Kirkwall centre” and “on the outskirts.” In reality, it’s firmly waving from the outskirts. The upside is peace, quiet, and a genuinely lovely view over Kirkwall; the downside is that an evening meal requires either a car or a heroic enthusiasm for walking.
There are definite positives: plenty of parking, a very nice building, and a comfortable, well-presented room. It’s also wonderfully quiet—ideal if your idea of nightlife is listening to the breeze.
However, this was the most expensive stop on my two‑week Scotland trip and, rather surprisingly, the only one not serving a cooked breakfast. It also came with a few memorable quirks not quite in keeping with the price tag. I was sent a keycode in advance and had to specifically request that someone be present on arrival as I needed assistance—hospitality by appointment rather than default. There was also signage asking guests not to wash clothes in the sink, which felt like a story I’d quite like to hear but wasn’t given the chance.
Guests are asked to remove their shoes on arrival—which is fair enough—but the designated shoe storage is a bookshelf that doubles as the breakfast station. As a result, your morning croissant is accompanied by a thoughtfully arranged display of footwear, which is not a pairing I’ve encountered elsewhere.
All in all, Aultnagar offers comfort, calm, and a great view—but with its pricing and “B&B” label, it feels like it slightly oversells the experience. A pleasant stay, just not quite the full package advertised.

Spotlessly clean and good facilities

Accommodation is part of a large family home covered into a B&B.
The shared kitchen area was most welcome to prepare snacks, eat and relax.
Room was spotlessly clean and had a little fridge, one of only a few on our tour that has.
Host was super attentive.

Lovely 2-night stay

Just a wonderful place to stay. The owners have thought of everything. Breakfast can even be enjoyed outdoors if the Scottish weather behaves.
Plenty information of tidal walks etc are provided for the guests.
Looking forward to heading back to the Orkney Islands in 2025
