Worth the walk

We were visiting Machu Picchu for two days but wanted to avoid Aguas Calientes. Gea Lodge was an inexpensive alternative, and was situated on some beautiful (and peaceful) grounds. The staff was nice and super accommodating (we were waking up at 4 AM to walk to Machu Picchu, so they made us lunches the night before). The only downside is the walk to/from Aguas Calientes. It's ~2.5 miles to/from the bus, and adding that onto a long day was a lot. Note also that Gea Lodge is cash-only. Would probably stay again, but I might pack a little lighter so that I didn't have to lug my bag there when I arrived.

Lovely stay

Gea Lodge is a lovely simple lodge surrounded by a roaring river and botanical gardens. The gardens and waterfall are beautiful. Erwin, the lodge owner, was really helpful. Dinner was delicious! The only issue was the shower didn't have the hottest water. Great place to stay if you're walking along the tracks from Hidroeléctrica and hiking up to Machu Picchu. It's only 2km from the start of the (very steep) hike up. To get to the hike up, turn right at a small train platform, go down a path and some stairs, and cross a bridge.

In the forest, instead of the crowded village

A totally different experience, with respect to the all-hotels-and-restaurants Machu Picchu Pueblo, if you don't mind walking for 4 km in the forest along the railway,
An ideal choice if you are doing the "alternative" way to go back to the Sacred Valley or Cuzco (walking + bus instead of the expensive train):
Clean, quiet, simple, relaxing, with a beautiful botanic garden just in front.
Bad Wi-Fi

A hidden gem

This place was great. It is around 1,5 km from Agua Calientes. That means if you walk the train tracks, you have this distance shorter on both ways. It is a great position if you walk up the steps to Machu Picchu. Owners are very nice, and the rooms are good. Eat at the lodge they serve great food, for a very reasonably price of 15 soles. Basic spanish is a good idea.

Thanks for your comments!
We love to see you enjoyed our traditional cuisine at Mamá Angélica Restaurant, thanks for leaving feedback and letting us grow reputation.
Aguas Calientes (also known as Machupicchu village) is 4Km far from us, around 1h walk. It's very easy to get to the first checkpoint at Puente Ruinas (2Km / 30min), but be prepared for a 500m /1h upstairs hike to get to the archaeological site of Machupicchu.
Thanks for staying at Gea Lodge. See you next time!

Great service!

As a family with 2 kids (7 and 8 years old) Aguas Calientes didn't sounded like a place where we could find something quiet, decent, reasonable priced to sleep.
But then I found the website of Gea Lodge (same owner as the Mandor Gardens)!
It sounded great and it was!
Erwin picked us up at the train station in Aguas Calientes and we had a nice walk along the railway to the lodge. The kids were very excited when a train passed by.
We ate a early diner (especially for us), had a nice shower and slept well in the basic but comfortable family room with 4 seperate beds.
The next morning Erwin made a lot of effort to get us on an early bus up to Machu Picchu. He went into the long line of people in aguas calientes for us early in the morning so that the bus could pick us up near the bridge. In that way we didnt had to wake up the kids in the middle of the night to get to machu picchu early in the morning!
Excellent service!
Erwin also provided packed brackfast/lunches for our day at machu picchu.
When you sleep at the gea lodge the only thing you hear at night is the train....
